Ronald Paterson Satin Reception Gown

R. Paterson Reception Gown & Coat, 1950's
(from Castle Howard estate)

$1,000 / Item Ref.# 30045 - SOLD

For those whom are not familiar with the lovely works of this designer, it should be known that the Scottish-born Ronald Paterson, was a prominent couturier during 1950-1970, with a fashion house based in the elite district of London, whom's works are now on view and in the collection of the Victorian & Albert Museum. The well-known couture millinier of the period- James Wedge, worked under Paterson to produce fine couture hats, which now are on view at a special "1960's Fashion" exhibition at the Victorian & Albert Museum, also.

One of Patterson's most important and renown clients, was the family of Castle Howard- one of Europes most extravagant and exceptional homes. Our gown is from the Castle Howard costume collection, which comprised of only the finest textiles and clothing spanning from the 18th through 20th century. Until recently, many of the cosutme & textile articles from the Howard collection were on view in their museum, and all identified by a blue tape label, for museum inventory identification/numbering.

This sumptuous gown dates to the early 1950's, and is fashioned from a vivid shade of peacock blue silk satin, and is accompanied by its original matching "swing" style evening coat. The coat is fashioned from black silk velvet, and fully lined in the peacock blue silk satin. I love the masterful construction of the material in the gown- the draping, pleating, and of course the regal train! With the elegant single shoulder strap, and richly detailed fabric, the wearer will but only have to be associated with styling of a Grecian goddess!

The coat is cut in a voluminous manner ("swing" style), and since it is lined in the peacock satin, the wearer will be able to allow the coat to be worn upon fronted so that the vivid lining can be seen! It's decorated at the upturned cuffs with black corded emboridery and faceted black jet beads (see detailed photo below).

Labeled Ronald Paterson / 25 Albemarle St. London and numbered with the museum i.d. label- 8760. This is excellent provenance for any textile, as it is similar to a couture number, it authenticates the piece it labels soley! Making this not only a collectible exsquisite, and finely made "London couture" ensemble; thus it is a piece of very important history with provenance. A special find!

Measurements: Bust 37", Waist 26".

The condition is Very Good- the dress and jacket do need a professional dry cleaning, as the dress has a few faint small "dirt" marks. We have decided to leave this up to the purchaser, as it has collectibility based just upon the fact it is a Castle Howard de-accessioned ensemble, and the new owner may not buy to wear, but for the lady who can't resist it's beauty, she'll appreciate this bargain as if we were to have it sent to our couture cleaners, we would list it between $1500-1800, so we have given ample deduction for a cleaning tab! Note it is a clean set, apart from the marks, and not "overall" soiled.
